In this unit, we learned about the process of evolution though a series of projects.

PCR Lab Timeline
The next project we did was the PCR lab. For this project, we used PCR and gel electrophoresis to find out our genetic history. My lab report below shows this lab in full detail.

Lastly, with a partner, we selected an animal and found out how and why that species evolved. We chose the flying squirrel. Our presentation is shown above.

Evolution
The process of a species changing over time.
Natural selection
The environment allowing certain mutations to become more dominant and killing off the disadvantageous traits. Variation among traits, competition for traits, survival, reproduction of the organisms that survived passing on the traits
Mutation
Small changes in DNA.
adaptation
A positive mutation thats spread throughout natural selection.
speciation
The development of a new species. Happens in two ways of isolation: allopatric speciation and sympatric speciation.
allopatric speciation
The separation and development of new species though a physical divide
Sympatric speciation
The separation and development of new species through a behavior divide like a change in mating behaviors.
Taxonomy
The study of evolution and classification of organisms.
Reflection
Overall, these projects taught me a lot of things, and they were fun and entertaining much of the time. The cladogram project went very smoothly. My group was able to finish that project relatively quickly, so we had spare time to make small changes that were needed. The PCR Lab was a little complex, and we didn't really end up getting any results, but I did learn how to use lab equipment. During this project, I learned that I need to focus more and not get distracted by off-topic conversations. For example, in the timeline project, I found myself getting distracted when making the presentation. I kept that in mind for the next project. I hope we can revisit the PCR lab again sometime because I'd love to learn from reliable results. Lastly, the timeline went very smoothly. I worked with a close friend, which was fun and productive. I like working with friends because it doesn't feel like work and the time is more enjoyable. I really liked this evolution unit, and I'm excited for future units.
